engleski književnik, smatra se najvećim romanopiscem viktorijanskog doba; u ranim djelima dobroćudno humorističan, u kasnijim gorko satiričan i kritičan u odnosu na bijedno naličje suvremenog gradskog prosperiteta (djelomično autobiografski roman David Copperfield, popularni Posmrtni spisi Pickwickova kluba, Oliver Twist, Priča o dva grada)
